Caring for Your Window Treatments

Blind Cleaning

Blind Cleaning

At Windo VanGo serving the greater Baltimore area, we often hear from our customers that they’re nervous about cleaning their window treatments because they’re afraid they might ruin them. However, to maintain their functionality and appearance at the window, treatments need regular care. You can think of it as basic housekeeping! Keeping in mind that some treatments and cleaning needs actually might need to go to a professional, you should know that you can take care of many types of cleaning right in your own home.

For Regular Maintenance of Blinds and Shades

Regular light dusting is perfect to maintain a like-new appearance for most blinds and shades. If you need to go deeper, use your vacuum’s clean brush attachment and gently vacuum the fabric. For cellular shades, you can simply spray compressed air (like you might use to clean your computer keyboard). If you have a stain, you can spot-clean most shades and blinds using a soft cloth or sponge dampened with lukewarm water. If you need to, you might use a very mild detergent, but be sure not to rub the fabric, which could crease or damage it.

Faux Wood and Aluminum Blinds

You can immerse most aluminum and faux wood blinds in your bathtub or sink using lukewarm water and a gentle detergent. Gently move the water over the slats with your fingers, and then close the blinds to rinse them and tilt them to let the water slip off. Be sure not to put the headrail under water—that might harm the lifting mechanism. Re-install the blind while it’s still damp, being sure to lower it so it can dry completely.

Professional Window Treatment Cleaners

If your treatment is made with delicate or fine fabrics, consult a professional, who might recommend ultrasonic cleaning or injection/extraction cleaning. To find professional cleaners near you, call Hunter Douglas at 1-888-501-8364 or reach out to one of our trained consultants for referrals.
